Gamification - A creative approach to developing learning activities that enhance student engagement with the learning content.
The use of games for teaching is certainly not a new concept. In the '80s I was tapping away on an Apple IIe keyboard developing child-level learning activities such as flashcard and other memorization games delivered in 16 brillant colors!! Although game development was a rewarding activity, it did not fit well in the corporate world of adult learning and was shelved for decades.
With the popularity of game-based learning activities bubbling up in the corporate training arena, my interest in game development has been rekindled. Working with easy to use game development software like Construct 2, Unity, and Clickteam Fusion 2.5 is a real treat. Couple those game engines with 3D software like Blender and iClone, fold carefully into an e-learning authoring tool and you have an incredibly rich environment for creating some very powerful learning activities for any age learner!
In my spare time, I work on a few game ideas I have sketched out on a notepad. Since I am fan of adventure games like Myst and strategy games, naturally one of these ideas happens to be an adventure/strategy game with islands, oceans, ships, pirates and other, yet to be designed, elements. Some Bryce 3D renderings of the adventure game environmental images are displayed below. Now, this is fun!! Stay tuned for updates!
